The Long Winter
$199.00
The First Thing He Will Ever Study
A newborn can focus on very little — maybe eight inches, maybe a foot. For the first months, the world is mostly soft shapes and light. Whatever hangs above the crib becomes one of the first objects a person ever looks at properly, day after day, while everything else is still a blur.
That felt worth making well.
Twelve Hours, One Needle
Someone sits down with a barbed needle and a pile of loose wool, and stabs it. Thousands of times. Slowly the fibres tangle and compress until a bear has a body, then a face, then a scarf wound once around his neck. It takes about twelve hours for one mobile.
No molds, no machinery, no two identical. The scarf hangs at a slightly different angle on every one. We can only finish a few each week, which is why yours is made after you order it rather than pulled off a shelf.
What Hangs From the Hoop
- The polar bear — Cream and round, wearing the only warm colour on the whole mobile.
- A penguin — Small, upright, standing very still.
- An igloo — Blocks felted individually into a dome, with a doorway you could look through.
- Two mountains and a pine tree — Snow-capped in pale grey and sage, the quietest part of the hoop.
- A fish and a star — Pale silver and soft grey, threaded between wool felt spheres in ice blue and cream.
Everything moves independently in the smallest draft. There is no motor and no music — just weight, balance, and the air in the room.
Nothing You Wouldn’t Want Above a Sleeping Baby
100% New Zealand wool, dyed with non-toxic, skin-safe colours. The hoop is solid beechwood, sanded and left untreated — no lacquer, no varnish, nothing that yellows or off-gasses. No plastic anywhere. No glue holding it together.
